For anybody interested in Scottish history, the Wallace Monument is an absolute must-see in Stirling. The tower was constructed in the 19th century as a monument to William Wallace – better known as ‘Braveheart’ – and stands at 67 metres high. It’s built from sandstone, which lends it a beautiful fragility, and stands on the Abbey Craig, from where it is said that Wallace watched the gathering of King Edward I’s army, just before the Battle of Stirling Bridge. Visitors to the monument can climb up the 246 step spiral staircase to the very top, which offers a viewing gallery and expansive, panoramic views across the Ochil Hills and the Forth Valley. The monument is home to items that are believed to have been owned by William Wallace, including the Wallace Sword, a 5ft claymore sword. Guests can also look around the ‘Hall of Heroes’, which houses busts of famous Scots. A day of climbing up the Wallace monument is more than just a day of good exercise; it offers a unique insight into Scotland’s history, as well as fantastic views over the region; it’s a beautiful merger of old and new.

We visited here yesterday. After the walk uphill to the monument I was in two minds whether I had the energy to climb 246 steps to the top. I’m so glad I did, the rooms on the route up the stairs were very informative and educational with a few interactive stations for young and old to participate in.
